Former world champion compares passion for professional boxing to addiction to drugs
Former World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury said that he may end his career in the next few years.
“I’ve been in love with boxing for so long – since I was a kid – and now I’m 34. I’ll probably retire in the next few years. It’s been a love-hate relationship. It’s been toxic at times. When it’s good, it’s very good, and when it’s bad, it’s very toxic.”
“I wanted to quit many times, but it always pulled me back. It’s like a huge drug and addiction. When I come to this gym, boxing is abusing my body, my mind, my soul. But then I feel like it’s bringing me to ecstasy. The high is incredible. It gives me the biggest highs, but also the lowest lows. Boxing is more addictive than any drug. You can’t give it up.”
Fury lost his last fight to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk in May. The “Gypsy King” lost his WBC heavyweight title. The Ukrainian, thanks to this victory, collected all the major championship belts and became the absolute heavyweight champion.
Usyk and Fury have reached an agreement for a rematch. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Alexander and Tyson will take place on December 21, 2024, in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said he would seek the introduction of video replays in this fight.
