Irina Podyalovskaya, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, has died at the age of 65, according to the website of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF).
Podyalovskaya, a middle-distance runner, died on Tuesday.
“The All-Russian Athletics Federation expresses its sincere condolences to the family, friends and the entire sports community of Irina Borisovna,” the message said.
In 1984, Podyalovskaya, as a member of the USSR national team, set a world record in the 4×800 meter relay race – 7 minutes 50.17 seconds. This result has not been surpassed by anyone yet. Podyalovskaya is the winner of the 1983 Universiade and the 1984 Friendship Games at a distance of 800 m.
