Ajax and Panathinaikos have had the second-highest scoring penalty shootout in European history

The teams each took 17 shots, with the Amsterdam team winning 13-12

Ajax And Panathinaikos held the second most productive penalty shootout in the history of European Cups. The opponents determined the winner in the third qualifying round Europa League 2024/25.

The teams made 34 shots between them, 25 of which were accurate. Panathinaikos failed to score its first attempt, and the Amsterdam team missed the chance to close the series with a fifth shot. Then the teams made three more simultaneous mistakes, scoring the remaining shots. Only in the 17th attempt did Ajax manage to snatch victory – 13:12.

The higher score was recorded in the first qualifying round of the 2023/24 Conference League between Glentoran (Northern Ireland) and Gzira United (Malta), with the Maltese club winning the series 14-13.

Let us recall that in the third qualifying round of the 2024/25 Europa League, Kryvbas lost twice to Viktoria Plzen (1:2, 0:1). Yuriy Vernydub’s team will play Betis in the playoff round of the Conference League selection.
