Athletistic / Figure skating. The latest agreements have been reached that the ashes of two-time Olympic figure skating champions Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov will be transported from Switzerland to Russia. They will be buried in their homeland.
“Now we can already say that after so many months the situation has been resolved. All agreements have been reached, and in the near future the ashes of Oleg Alekseevich and Lyudmila Evgenievna will be transported to St. Petersburg. Volkovskoye cemetery, as Oleg Protopopov bequeathed, this will tentatively happen on September 11,” the relatives of the legendary skaters told TASS.
Oleg Protopopov died in November 2023 in Switzerland and was cremated in Grindelwald. It is worth noting that in 2022, Protopopov bequeathed to be buried at the Volkovskoye Cemetery in St. Petersburg with his wife Lyudmila Belousova. She died in September 2017; Protopopov kept her ashes at home.
Belousova and Protopopov won the 1964 Olympic Games in Innsbruck (Austria) and the 1968 Games in Grenoble (France). The couple won the World Championships and the European Championships four times.
