Belousova and Protopopov’s ashes will be buried in September in St. Petersburg

The ashes of two-time Olympic figure skating champions Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov will be buried in St. Petersburg in September, the athletes’ relatives told TASS.

Protopopov died on 31 October 2023 at the age of 91 in Switzerland. Protopopov’s will stated that he was to be buried with Belousova in Saint Petersburg; she died in September 2017. Protopopov kept Lyudmila Evgenievna’s ashes at his home.

“Now we can say that the situation is resolved after so many months.” All agreements have been reached, and the ashes of Oleg Alekseevich and Lyudmila Evgenievna will soon be delivered to St. Petersburg. They will be buried at the Volkovsky cemetery, as Oleg bequeathed. Tentatively, this will take place on September 11, the relatives of the Soviet figure skaters said.

The duo won the USSR championships six times, the world and European championships four times, and won gold at the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games. Belousova and Protopopov were invited to Switzerland for demonstrations in 1979, where they remained. In August 1995, they were granted Swiss citizenship.
