Barry Hearn: Joshua is a special athlete, he wants to beat Usyk

Anthony lost twice to the Ukrainian boxer

Founder and head of the promotion company Matchroom Sport Barry Hearn spoke about the desire of the former world champion Anthony Joshua (28-3, 25 KO) to have a third fight with the holder of the WBO/WBA/IBO/WBC belts in the heavyweight division Alexander Usik (22-0, 14 KOs).

“He wants to beat Usyk. The thing is, in the first fight with Alexander, he lost, frankly. He left, regrouped, learned his lesson, studied Usyk, but still lost the second fight. That’s why Joshua was so upset after the rematch. The fight ended in a split decision and was close. But Anthony is a very special athlete.”

“He’s doing great with money. Joshua has more money than he needs. You could load a battleship if you put all his money in one place. But these guys want to win. They want to win and have a legacy. I don’t think Joshua will sleep at night until he unifies the titles.”

Usyk defeated Joshua twice in 2021 and 2022. First, the Ukrainian won by unanimous decision, taking the Briton’s championship belts. Then, Alexander successfully defended his titles, winning by split decision.

In his last fight on the night of May 19, Usyk inflicted the first defeat of his professional career on Tyson Fury in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision of the judges: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.

Usyk and Fury have reached an agreement for a rematch. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Alexander and Tyson will take place in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on December 21. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said he would seek to introduce video replays in this fight.

Joshua will fight Daniel Dubois on September 21. The arena for the event will be London’s Wembley Stadium. There, Dubois will defend the IBF heavyweight title, which Usyk renounced.
