Former figure skater Kawaguchi explained why she left Russia during the Sochi Olympics

Double European Champion Figure Skater Yuko Kawaguchi who competed for Russia with Alexander Smirnov, told that she was very upset about missing the 2014 Olympics and so temporarily moved from St. Petersburg to Finland.

Kawaguchi and Smirnov are two-time European champions (2010, 2015), two-time European silver medalists (2009, 2011), two-time bronze medalists (2008) at the European Championships, two-time World Championship bronze medalists (2009, 2010). They retired in 2017.

— The saddest moment of your career was not going to the Sochi Olympics? You even went to Finland for a while to avoid all that noise.

– Yes, it was very offensive. I was in good shape, ready to perform. Sasha almost did not have time to recover his knee. In order not to risk his health, we made the decision: “without Sochi”. So many years have passed that everything is in the past; regrets should not lead to unnecessary sadness.

And at that time, the right thing to do was to go with my mother to Finland, neighboring St. Petersburg, for the duration of the Olympics. After all, at every step, everyone was discussing the news of the Olympics, everything reminded me of the tournament I had lost. Why did you have to watch that? — Kawaguchi told .

At the 2014 Games, Tatyana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won gold in the pairs competition, while Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov took silver. Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov took sixth place.

The full version of Yuko Kawaguchi’s interview will soon be available on the website.
