Athletistic/Figure skating. Three-time Olympic figure skating champion Irina Rodnina has expressed doubts about the global sports community’s support for Polish President Andrzej Duda’s ambitious plans to lead the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after his term as head of state ends in 2025.

Earlier, former Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski said that Duda intends to run for the post of IOC president after finishing his political career. Current IOC President Thomas Bach had previously said that he would not be re-elected for a new term and that elections for the new head of the organization would take place in March 2025.

“The desire to occupy a high position, including the IOC President, is quite typical of the Polish authorities, and Duda is no exception. He may be looking for a new job that will be more visible and profitable. Although for this position it is not necessary to be a famous athlete or coach, the candidate should nevertheless have experience in sports organizations and be familiar with at least one or two Olympic sports,” Rodnina noted.

She also added that she sees serious prospects for Sebastian Coe, the president of the World Athletics Association, who could become one of the candidates for the post of IOC president. At the same time, she expressed doubts about Duda’s chances, believing that his ambitions could be ahead of reality. In addition to Coe, possible contenders for the post of IOC chief are Spaniard Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. and Japanese Marinara Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation.
