Chechnya Sports Minister Akhmat Kadyrov awarded freestyle wrestler Razambek Zhamalov from Dagestan with an apartment and 10 million rubles for winning the 2024 Olympics in the weight category up to 74 kg for the Uzbekistan national team. Islam Dudayev from Chechnya also received an apartment and became a bronze medalist in the weight category up to 65 kg, playing for the Albanian national team. Earlier in Derbent, freestyle wrestler Dauren Kurugliev, who brought bronze to the Greek national team in the weight category under 86 kg, received a certificate for an apartment from a philanthropist.
“Why should we condemn the rewarding of these athletes? They come from our republics and have glorified their people and their coaching school. People have the right to choose which country they represent. There are many examples of people changing their citizenship for the sake of family, work or success. It is inappropriate to punish them for this,” Rodnina noted.
She also stressed that supporting Olympic champions and medalists is the norm, as is recognizing the achievements of outstanding individuals in other fields, such as science and art. Rodnina recalled that despite the current restrictions, it is important to remember the country’s versatility and multinationality.
