The World Athletics Council has endorsed the recommendation of the Athletics Integrity Council (AIU) regarding sanctions against the Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA), World Athletics said.
In December 2023, the AIU Board of Directors issued an indictment against BAA after an 18-month investigation.
The investigation began after two Bahraini athletes were caught receiving blood transfusions at the Tokyo Olympics. It also emerged that the BAA had hired a coach suspended for anti-doping rule violations to work with the national team.
World Athletics has decided that representatives of the Bahrain Athletics Association will not be able to participate in official competitions for 12 months starting from 1 June 2024.
The BAA will also spend up to $7.3 million over the next four years to implement anti-doping measures and pay for the costs of investigating and monitoring the implementation of the AIU roadmap.
