Ukrainian woman makes it into US Open main draw
Ukrainian tennis player Yulia Starodubtseva shared her impressions of reaching the main draw US Open 2024.
“The final with Sonia Kartal was a surprise. At the recent Wimbledon, she passed the qualification, and then beat Kirstea and Burel, losing only in the third round to Coco Gauff. The British player has men’s tennis with the strongest forehand and a stable backhand. She has an excellent view of the court, and I was even a little confused because of this, she easily deceived me. I did not immediately understand what to do.”
“The first set ended (2:6), so we had to change tactics, which made her make more mistakes. Maybe her level dropped a little. You can’t play so filigree the whole match. Or both factors worked at the same time.”
No matter how hard I tried to push away the thought that I could qualify for the fourth time in a row, it stubbornly crept into my head and could play a bad joke on me. By the way, it would be interesting to check if anyone managed to qualify for all four times in one season.”
“Yes, in the first set the referee gave me a warning. This happens to me sometimes, but it’s normal. I need to vent my aggression verbally and then I calm down. It’s hard for me to control my emotions, but outside of tennis I don’t do that.”
“From recent experience, I see that many tennis players are super-calm in their non-competitive life, but when they step on the court, they can give reason to think that they are angry monsters. Although in reality, they are not. Tennis is so hard mentally that such antics or shouts are part of the process.”
“Of course, my beloved Lesya Tsurenko came to support me, as well as Ilya Marchenko. The national team? It’s too early to say for sure, but I hope you’ll see me. I’d like that.”
The Ukrainian beat Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the qualifying final. Starodubtseva lost the first set but won the next two.
Yulia became the seventh Ukrainian tennis player in the main draw of the US Open 2024. Let us remind you that today her compatriots learned their opponents in the first round of the tournament. Marta Kostyuk will play McCartney Kessler from the USA, Elina Svitolina will fight with Argentine Maria Lourdes Carle, Dayana Yastremska will face German Julia Niemeyer, Angelina Kalinina – Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin, and Lesya Tsurenko – American Peyton Stearns. Finally, Kateryna Beindl, who got into the main draw by “protected rating”, got Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto as her opponent.
