The Ukrainian women’s team won the Chess Olympiad, held in Chennai, India. This was reported by the official FIDE website.
“Thanks to the main victories of Maria Muzychuk and Anna Ushenina, Ukraine defeated Poland 3:1 and won the gold medals,” the organization said in a statement.

It should be noted that the Ukrainians approached the last day of the game in the status of candidates for awards. At the same time, they fell behind the Indian team.
However, the unexpected defeat of the main contenders for the title from the United States allowed our team to come out on top.
In the final standings, the Ukrainians scored the same number of points as the national team of Georgia, however, they surpassed it in additional indicators.

Recall that at the Chess Olympiad Ukraine performed in the women’s tournament in the star line-up: Maria and Anna Muzychuk, Anna Ushenina, Yulia Osmak and Natalia Buksa. The tournament was held for the first time in four years: at the previous Olympics in 2018, the Ukrainians took second place, only losing to the Chinese team.
The Ukrainians approached the tournament in the status of second number in the rating. The leaders, and the main favourites, are chess players from India, led by 2019 World Rapid Champion Gumpy Konner.
The Ukrainian women’s team won the Chess Olympiad for the second time in history. The first time this happened was in 2006. From that line-up, only Anna Ushenina has performed in the current tournament.
