Former Russian figure skating team doctor Philipp Shvetsky said he did not expect Hayo Seppelt to refuse, although the move would be professional.
The basis of the lawsuit against the journalist was a film about the doping case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, which talked about Shvetsky’s possible involvement in doping the athlete’s body. Seppelt also claimed that the doctor was involved in the scandal of disqualification of six Russian rowers before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In January, the Nikoulinsky District Court granted Shvetsky’s application to protect his honor, dignity and business reputation. The court ordered Seppelt to officially refute the information he had previously disseminated about Shvetsky. The Moscow City Court rejected Seppelt’s appeal against the district court’s decision.
— I have not yet received a reasoned decision, it will arrive within a month. This is the final decision of the highest court of appeal, the Moscow City Court. As I understand it, you can go further to the Court of Cassation, but I think they will not do it. If you develop the topic in other courts, you will be able to find out the truth in this case, which is completely unfavorable to this party. As an action develops, additional questions and answers may arise, which is completely uninteresting (Seppelt).
— Nobody ever gave you the ruble?
– No, of course not. But it was not about the ruble, but, in general, about proving that this whole situation does not correspond to reality. After all, I participated in these events and now I have been able to prove that the stated facts are not true.
— Do you expect physical results from the case? For example, Seppelt’s denials?
— As far as I understand, legally and procedurally, the links between our legislation and theirs are broken. They appealed to the Hague Convention of 1965 and other documents, but as far as I understand, we have come out of all this. Of course, you want the other side to treat the issue professionally even if it loses in court, if it considers itself professional. If I were wrong and the court proved it, then, of course, I would make this decision, in accordance with my obligations. But, to be honest, I doubt it. Again, my goal was not to get a refutation; I wanted to prove to myself that I was right. Moreover, I am even grateful to that side for motivating me to understand, ”Shvetsky told the correspondent.
