Ukrainian tennis player takes to US Open court with news of another Russian missile attack

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina said that she went out for the first round match US Open 2024knowing about the Russian army’s missile attack on Ukraine.

“It’s never easy to play the first matches, they can be quite tough. My opponent also played well. I had a very short transition from Monterrey to the US Open. I trained for an hour the day before, so I didn’t have much time on court, but today it was enough.”

“Yes, I saw the news, I know there were over 100 missiles… It’s very hard. I was checking the news all the time. I was very, very sad to see what was happening today, what is happening every day. It was a very, very hard day for Ukrainians. It’s just a disaster, to be honest, to wake up and see such news, that Ukrainians are suffering so much.”

“Does it affect my game? I try to switch off, of course, but when you wake up and immediately see such bad news, it affects you mentally, you think about it. Especially when something is wrong, it’s natural. At some moments, it happens that it affects me a lot. At Wimbledon, it was very difficult… When it concerns children, innocent people, it is very difficult for me… Extremely.”

In the first round of the American Grand Slam tournament, the Ukrainian beat Maria Lourdes Carle from Argentina in three sets. Elina lost the first set, but managed to take the next two.

In the second round, Svitolina’s opponent will be another Ukrainian tennis player, Angelina Kalinina. The Ukrainian beat Oceane Dodin from France in the opening match.
