Rui Patricio joins Atalanta on free transfer

The last club in the career of the 36-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper was Roma

Atalanta announced the transfer of the former goalkeeper Roma Rui Patricio.

The 36-year-old Portuguese joined the club from Bergamo on a free transfer. The parties signed a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Rui Patricio’s last club was Roma, whose colors he defended from 2021 to 2024. The Portuguese goalkeeper conceded 28 goals in 24 games for Roma last season. The goalkeeper kept six clean sheets. With the Romans, the Portuguese reached the Europa League final (2022/23) and triumphed in the Conference League (2021/22). In July, Rui Patricio announced his departure from the Roman club.

Patricio has 108 caps for the Portugal national team, with whom the goalkeeper became European champion in 2016.

At Atalanta, Patricio will compete for a place in the starting lineup with Marco Carnessechi, while another goalkeeper of the club, Juan Musso, has today joined Atletico on loan.

Atalanta have already signed Genoa forward Mateo Retegui for €22 million this transfer window, loaned Udinese midfielder Lazar Samardzic, bought Cagliari midfielder Ibrahim Suleman for €7.5 million, and loaned Frosinone midfielder Marco Brescianini. Atalanta signed Torino defender Raul Bellanova for €20 million, and the team’s latest new signing is 36-year-old Colombian midfielder Juan Cuadrado, who joined on a free transfer.

Atalanta have taken three points from their opening two Serie A games. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team will play their next match away to Inter on August 30.
