Markevich: Dynamo must advance from Europa League group

The Kiev club lost to Salzburg in the playoffs of the Champions League qualification on aggregate

Famous Ukrainian coach Myron Markevich summed up the performance of the Kyiv Dynamo in the Champions League qualification, and also made a prediction for the Ukrainian club’s future games in the Europa League group stage.

“Despite the elimination from Salzburg, we should give credit to Dynamo coach Oleksandr Shovkovskiy for the work he has done. Under his leadership, the Kievans began to act more diversely, the team speed increased, they became more functional, which allows them to maintain a high tempo.”

“Of course, this progress would not have been possible without the progress of individual players. In defense, first of all, young Mihavko with his phenomenal first pass, in my opinion, in a year or two, he can become one of the leaders of Dynamo, whom famous European clubs will want to see, as well as Kabaev, Shaparenko, Pikhalyonok.”

“Dynamo lacked the ability to convert scoring chances. Based on the results of the two matches, the Kyivians created more threats than their opponents, but Salzburg scored three times, while Dynamo scored only once. If Dynamo wants to be seen in European competitions, it should strengthen itself with a solid striker who would cling to the ball and create pressure on the opponent’s defense. Just remember yesterday’s match in Salzburg. The visitors served more than ten corners, but the hosts easily won the “second floor”. Although, in general, Dynamo performed well in the first stages of the Champions League, beating Partizan and Rangers.”

“The Kyivans should get out of the Europa League group, of course, provided that they keep all their key players and there are no injuries. Still, by European Cup standards, you can’t say that they have a long bench.”

The first game of the playoff round of the qualification between Dynamo and Salzburg ended with a defeat for the white-blues – 0:2. The return match in Austria brought goals from Adam Dagim and Vladislav Vanat (1:1).

Based on the aggregate score of two matches (3:1), Salzburg made it to the group stage of the Champions League. Dynamo will have to play 8 matches in the main tournament of the Europa League.
