Analysts estimate that the two major sporting events should bring France between 6.7 and 11.1 billion euros in revenue, including the expected impact on tourism over the next 15 years.
August 27 in Paris The Summer Paralympic Games have started. According to the organizers’ forecasts, they should become a logical continuation of the colorful 2024 Summer Olympicswhich has already entered history and promises to be the first in the last few decades Games that will bring profit to the organizers. And not a small one. And the words of IOC President Thomas Bach, who declared that the 2024 Olympics were the Games of a new era, are not so far from the truth.
The full economic and social impact of the 2024 Olympics and 2024 Paralympics will be assessed after September 8, when the Paralympic Games officially end, but preliminary conclusions can already be made. According to analysts, the two large-scale sporting events should bring France income from 6.7 to 11.1 billion euros, including the expected impact on tourism over the next 15 years. At the same time, from 3 to 5 billion euros of budget money were spent on organizing and holding the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics. You must admit, the difference is quite significant.
How did France manage to do all this? Thanks to its developed infrastructure, excellent marketing and unconventional moves. Just look at the opening ceremony, which involved 85 boats and launches to transport 206 delegations and 6,800 athletes over a distance of almost 6 kilometers. About 320,000 spectators watched the opening parade live, and the TV broadcast attracted 23 million people in France and more than a billion worldwide.
More than 9.5 million tickets were sold for the various events of the 2024 Games, with 38% of them purchased by foreigners. The cycling competitions were attended by more than a million people, the beach volleyball tournaments held at the foot of the Eiffel Tower – 450,000. The women’s rugby sevens match attracted 66,000 spectators and set a new world attendance record.
Among the non-standard innovations was the first ever Olympic Marathon for all, in which anyone could take part, which brought together about 35,000 runners from all over France and other countries. The innovative “Champions Park”, where medalists were honored, was visited by almost 300,000 people, and its average attendance was more than 90,000 people per day.
During the 2024 Summer Olympics, 150 fan zones were open throughout France, including both mainland departments and overseas territories. Even holding surfing competitions in Tahiti turned out to be completely justified from an economic point of view, not to mention the sporting and aesthetic components.
When it comes to the tourist effect of the Olympics, the figures are no less impressive. According to Choose Paris Region, the occupancy rate of Paris hotels during the Olympic period averaged 80% (+15% compared to 2023) with an average length of stay of 3.3 nights (+22% compared to 2023). “Inspired” by the basketball tournament and the presence of NBA stars, Lille welcomed more than 700,000 tourists with a hotel occupancy rate of 95%. As for Marseille and its environs, the region welcomed 19% more tourists than last year, and the city – 30%. Let’s see how these figures change after September 8.
The 2024 Paralympics will be held in Paris from August 28 to September 8. The Ukrainian team will be represented at the Games by 140 athletes. Ukrainians will compete in 17 of the 22 Paralympic sports – this is a record in the history of our country.
Medal count for 2024 Olympics in Paris The US team won, winning 40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals. The Americans managed to take first place thanks to the victory of the women’s basketball team in the final match of the tournament.
The second place was taken by the Chinese team, which also won 40 gold medals, but lost in the number of other awards. Japan is in third place. The top 10 also included teams from Australia, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, South Korea, Italy and Germany. The Ukrainian team won 12 medals and took the final 22nd place.
