Puerto Rican national volleyball player found dead at home in Türkiye

Puerto Rican volleyball player Pilar Marie Victoria Lopez, who played for Turkish club Nilufer Belediyespor, was found dead at her home.

The athlete did not show up for the team’s training; club representatives went to her home, where they found the player’s body. The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the incident; the exact cause of death of the 28-year-old athlete will be determined by a forensic medical examination.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Pilar Marie Victoria Lopez. The sudden loss of Pilar has shocked us all. Our condolences go out to her family, loved ones and friends,” the club said in a statement.

Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi also expressed his condolences for the death of the national team player.

“Pilar was an exceptional volleyball player who brought glory to our island on the international stage, setting an example of dedication and demonstrating her passion for the sport. Pilar showed that with hard work and determination, dreams can be achieved.

His legacy will live on in every young person who dreams of achieving great things, on every volleyball court, in every Puerto Rican heart inspired by his example. Rest in peace! — Pierluisi wrote on the social network.
