State Duma deputy hopes ex-figure skater Drobyazko will be offered Russian citizenship

Margarita Drobyazko, a two-time winner of the European Figure Skating Championships, after the statements of the Lithuanian authorities about the deprivation of her citizenship, should receive a Russian passport, according to Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Boris Paykin.

Earlier, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said he would support such a decision because of the participation of the figure skater and her partner and husband Povilas Vanagas in Tatyana Navka’s Swan Lake show. Also in Lithuania, they came out in favor of depriving the dancing couple of Lithuanian state awards.

– The proposal to deprive Margarita Drobyazko of Lithuanian citizenship, her country’s most successful figure skater, is surprising even in the context of the rest of the anti-Russian hysteria. This beautiful athlete brought little Lithuania a bronze medal as the world champion. She, along with her partner Povilas Vanagas, became a thirteen-time national champion. But as soon as they agreed to perform in the Russian show, Lithuania did not need all the achievements, titles, merits. I hope that the Ministry of Sports will launch a proposal to grant Russian citizenship to Margarita Drobyazko. Unlike Lithuania, we value talent,” Paikin told .

Drobyazko, who dances on ice with Vanagas, was born in Moscow, but after the collapse of the USSR, she represented Lithuania on the international stage. The skaters are bronze medalists at the 2000 World Championships, participants in five Olympic Games. In 2000, Drobyazko and Vanagas were awarded Knight’s Crosses of the Order of Gediminas.
