Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei is in critical condition in hospital after suffering burns to 75 percent of her body, Reuters reports, citing Kenyan and Ugandan media.
According to preliminary data, on Sunday afternoon, the athlete’s boyfriend, Danielle Ndiema Marangach, doused his partner with petrol during an argument and set him on fire. The man also suffered burns as a result of the attack. Police are investigating. Cheptegei remains in critical condition in a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.
The athlete is 33 years old, she participated in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where she took 44th place in the marathon.
