Veronika Stepanova: “We must focus on competitions where they are ready to see us with the flag and the anthem”

Olympic cross-country skiing champion Veronika Stepanova said that Russian athletes should take part in international competitions where they will compete with national symbols.

On Wednesday, the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) is hosting a session “Changing the Goalposts of Global Sport. Shaping Our Response.”

– We need to go back, but where? Why are we focusing only on the West? We need to focus on those competitions where everyone is ready to see us with flags, anthems, without any political component, “the correspondent reports, based on Stepanova’s words.

Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev stressed that Russian sports preserve Olympic values and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recognizes the authority of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).

“Perhaps we are the last guardians of Olympic values, the last light for many abroad. Traditional values, where no one is discriminated against on any grounds. We will return to the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Games, and develop other formats.

The same applies to WADA: we will solve this problem and RUSADA will return its accreditation. Already today, informally, comrades from there recognize that this is the best agency. They do not speak publicly during the preparation of the arbitration meeting. But there is informal recognition on the sidelines. We will make sure that this decision is also made legally, “said Degtyarev.

In December 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld WADA’s claim against RUSADA and removed RUSADA from its World Anti-Doping Code compliant status for the Russian side’s failure to ensure the transfer of reliable LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) to WADA.

Gazprom Media Holding acts as the information partner of the Eastern Economic Forum.
