Ugandan track and field athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, a participant in the 2024 Paris Olympics, has died at the age of 33, the Uganda Athletics Federation press service reports.
Earlier, Cheptegei was hospitalized with burns on 75% of her body. It was reported that the athlete’s boyfriend, Daniel Ndiema, doused the girl with gasoline during an argument and set her on fire. Ndiema also suffered burns and is being treated at the same hospital.
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning, a victim of domestic violence. We condemn such acts and demand justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the federation said in a statement.
Cheptegei finished 44th in the marathon at the 2024 Olympics.
