Tokyo Olympics silver medalist pole vault coach Angelique Sidorova Svetlana Abramova talked about working with an athlete.
– Have you ever thought that a more experienced mentor can give more to your athlete than to you?
– Not. With Angelica, none of the male coaches would simply have understood. She’s different, not like everyone else. I can’t even say in one word what his talent is. It seems to be small, there is no crazy data. But that’s the outer shell. And inside there is some kind of incredible core that allowed and allows you to show the maximum possible result at the right time and in the right place. It’s like walking on a razor’s edge. And somehow, I immediately felt it. Then I started to find traits in Angelica that set me apart. Maybe that’s why it’s always been easy for me to understand her.
– Does the above mean that the coaching technique, which works very well for Sidorova, may not work at all with another athlete?
“I can’t say anything about that. For 16 years, I have been working in the pole vault with the senior coach of the national team, and it is my main activity.
– That is, working with Sidorova is just a hobby, an occupation of the soul?
– Can you say that. It’s actually a plus. Because it allows me to be free from some of the demands that are usually placed on personal mentors. I’m not financially dependent on Angelica’s results, I’ve never needed to somehow speed up her preparation. Accordingly, it was not planned to show a result at any cost.
– And how can you work with an athlete if such a task is not assigned to him?
– Our main task has always been to raise the quality of jumping, so that each year we can go one step higher. The result is only a consequence. Angelica jumps stably not because she knows how to take a certain height, but first of all because she knows how to jump in general, quotes RT Abramova.
