Derevyanchenko: Before the Berlanga vs. Canelo fight, I didn’t expect Edgar to go the full distance

On the night of September 14-15, Canelo defeated Berlanga by unanimous decision

Ukrainian super middleweight boxer Sergey Derevyanchenko (15-6, 10 KO) commented on the outcome of the fight between the WBC, WBO, WBA super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO) And Edgar Berlanga (22-1, 17 KO).

“It was a good fight. Before the fight, I didn’t expect him to go the distance, but when the first round started, I saw Berlanga. He was ready.”

“Did Canelo slow down? I don’t think so. He looked good, but Berlanga was very well prepared. Berlanga went the distance because he wanted to win. He was mentally and physically prepared. He put on a good fight. They both put on a good performance.”

In the third round, Berlanga was knocked down, but managed to get up and continue the fight. The fight eventually lasted the entire distance, and Canelo won by unanimous decision (118:109, 118:109, 117:110).

This victory was the fifth in a row for Canelo – his last defeat was in May 2022 in a fight against Dmitry Bivol.

Let us recall that in May 2024, Canelo, being the absolute world champion in the super middleweight division, defeated Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision. After that, the IBF obliged the Mexican to hold his next fight against the German William Scull, who has been the mandatory challenger according to this organization for almost a long time.

Canelo turned down the fight and chose to fight Berlanga, which resulted in him losing his IBF title.
