Slovan and Ignatenko suffer crushing away defeat to Celtic in Champions League

After a foul by a Ukrainian midfielder, a penalty was awarded against the Slovak team

Bratislava Slovan lost on the road Celtic in the first round Champions League 2024/25 — 1:5.

Midway through the first half, Liam Scales headed in a pass from Arne Engels to give Celtic the lead. After the break, Kego Furuhashi and Engels completed the rout. It should be noted that the third goal was scored from a penalty awarded after a foul by Daniil Ignatenko.

Slovan reduced the deficit through Kevin Wimmer but that was all the visitors could do. Celtic scored twice more (Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah) to secure a crushing victory.

Ignatenko was replaced in the 76th minute. Let us recall that in early September the Ukrainian midfielder signed a three-year contract with the Slovak club.

In the next round of the Champions League, Slovan will host Manchester City, while Celtic will play away against Borussia D. The matches are scheduled for October 1.
