The European Chess Union also spoke out in support of Ukraine on this issue.
Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen at the gala dinner FIDEdedicated to the organization’s centenary, received an award to the greatest chess player of the last century and took the opportunity to publicly support Ukraine.
“It feels a bit strange to receive this award while I am still an active player. I am more concerned about the Norway vs Vietnam match right now. I am of course happy to receive this award, but in my personal opinion, Garry Kasparov has had a better career than me. I understand why I received this award, but I still think he was more deserving. But I would say that at least in honor of Garry, I am sure he would take the opportunity to advise against restoring the Russian and Belarusian chess federations, so I will do the same. Thank you!” Magnus said.
The FIDE General Assembly is scheduled to take place next weekend, where the possibility of lifting sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian chess federations (at the request of the Kyrgyz Chess Federation) will be considered.
Earlier, Ukrainian chess players addressed their colleagues with an open letter, in which they asked not to allow the lifting of sanctions against Russian athletes.
Following this, the Ukrainian Chess Federation, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of our country published a joint letter with an appeal to FIDE on the same matter.
Today it became known that the European Chess Union published a strong statement in which it asks the FIDE General Assembly to maintain sanctions against the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. In addition, the ECU asks FIDE to demand that the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) cease all actions on the territory of Ukraine. In case of failure to comply with the requirements, the Union calls on the governing body to immediately suspend the RCF from participation in competitions.
The FIDE General Assembly will be held on September 21-22 in Budapest. The event will take place in the final days of the 2024 Chess Olympiad, which is taking place in the Hungarian capital.
In the early morning hours of February 24, 2022, Russia launched a missile attack and aerial bombardment on most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia is now in its 939th day.
