David Haye: I would go into the fight with Usyk with great confidence

The Briton compared his and the Ukrainian champion’s fights against Tony Bellew

Former World Champion David Haye believes he could beat the WBO/WBA/IBO/WBC heavyweight title holder Alexandra Usika.

“I remember watching him fight Tony Bellew. It was after Tony and I had fought, so I had high hopes for him. I wanted him to beat Usyk and he beat him. Usyk, on the other hand, took his time and was always on the back foot, picking his shots.”

“What people don’t realize is that Tony Bellew wasn’t in his prime, unlike the fights with me. So Usyk was keeping up a pace that Tony couldn’t handle. The fact that Bellew was able to land Usyk’s right hand gives me confidence that I’m going to win. I just hit a lot harder.”

“I would go into this fight with a lot of confidence. I just had to make sure I was in great shape. I’ve sparred a lot with southpaws. It would be a long-range fight. It’s a great fight, I would like to have it. Remember the big, slender Ukrainian southpaw Alexander Gurov, who I knocked out 45 seconds into the first round. It’s not quite the same.”

Usyk fought Bellew in 2018. The Ukrainian knocked out the British boxer in the eighth round and defended his light heavyweight titles.

The Ukrainian is preparing for a second fight with former WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Alexander’s training camp will be located in Valencia.

The second fight between Usyk and Fury will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said he would seek the introduction of video replays in this fight.
