Lithuanian Skating Federation President Liliya Vanagene has reacted to her son Povilas Vanagas’ decision to participate in Tatyana Navka’s ice show, which deprived the figure skater and Margarita Drobyazko of state awards.
On August 10, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda signed a decree excluding Drobiazko and Vanagas from the list of holders of the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, 5th degree. Nauseda, after signing the decree, said that all the merits of Drobyazko and Vanagas for the country were barred by the decision to perform in Tatiana Navka’s show in Sochi.
“As the president of the Lithuanian Skating Federation and especially as the mother of Povilas Vanagas, I am very offended, sorry and worried about the decision made by my children. I sincerely apologize to those who were offended and disappointed by this.
I will not justify them, they are adults and are independently responsible for their actions. I hope that the decision of Povilas and Margarita will not be identified with the Lithuanian Skating Federation and its athletes, because they ended their active sports career in figure skating 16 years ago and are in no way related to activities of the federation. We walk away from their actions, quotes Vanagene Delphi .
Drobyazko and Vanagas were nominated for the award in 2000. Lithuanian Dance Couple – World Championship bronze medalists and double European Championship bronze medalists.
