Vasiliev on Finnish skiers’ funding problems: “Politics will lead some sports to a sad end”

Olympic biathlon champion Dmitri Vassiliev Commenting on the funding problems of Finnish skiers, he said that policies, particularly those of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), would lead to the end of some sports.

Earlier, Finnish media reported that the executive board of the Finnish Ski Association had decided to transfer the costs of preparing for and participating in the World Cup to the athletes.

“I don’t want to rejoice, I feel sorry for the athletes who find themselves in this situation – they have to travel to key competitions at the expense of the state or sponsors. But as I understand it, there are no sponsors at the moment.

In skiing, WADA policy has led to this by dividing athletes into so-called “sick” and healthy athletes. The competition has simply become uninteresting for spectators while the Norwegians occupy the top ten. They are allowed to openly use banned substances. This is a parody of the sport as a whole. You look at the relay race at the World Cup: there are three Norwegian teams. Skiing is gradually becoming uninteresting. And now the Finns cannot find sponsors and the state, due to the economic situation, cannot sponsor sports. Politics will lead some sports to a sad end,” Vasiliev told .
