Three-time Olympic medalist, six-time world swimming champion Yulia Efimova told how she was attacked by a stray dog.
The incident happened at the end of August. Efimova posted her bandaged hand on the social network.
— You were bitten by a stray dog. Does that mean you had 40 injections?
– Thank God, now they only give six injections. I was also afraid that it would be 40. But this norm has existed for a long time. We were in a recreation center in Volgodonsk. There are a lot of stray dogs here, running in packs. But this is a problem in small towns.
A big dog ran and attacked my dog Jasper. I didn’t have time to pick him up, and she bit my arm and knocked us all over. Then she let me go and picked Jasper up. I jumped to my feet. I remember reading a book on dog training. And it said that if a dog attacks aggressively, he should be picked up by his hind legs.
I grabbed her, she quickly let go of my dog. My dad immediately ran. All this happened in a matter of seconds. But it seemed like it was in slow motion. Her dad scared her and the stray dog ran away. And we were left in shock. Thank God Jasper survived thanks to his thick fur and my hand.
-What kind of dog attacked you?
– Most likely, it was a healthy male that attacked. The female dog wouldn’t attack the dog. Not a German shepherd, I wouldn’t have survived then. The teeth aren’t that huge. Just a big mongrel. And not Alabai, thank God. When I arrived at the emergency room, the nurse told me how in Volgodonsk a girl had been bitten by a homeless Alabai, who attacked her in the dark while she was walking after work. He bit her face, arms, legs. It’s not clear how she survived. She was saved by a miracle, or so they say. “You still got off easy,” the nurse told me.
– What’s wrong with your hand?
“There are four bites on her now.” One big one and three smaller ones. I had to get a tetanus shot and take antibiotics. At first I didn’t really want to take them. But my hand was very swollen and red. Apparently some kind of infection had spread and the temperature had risen. After the antibiotics it all went away. Injections under the shoulder blade…
For the first three or four days, the arm didn’t work at all. The bite was deep. And now it’s just a scar. Everything has already healed, although it still hurts from time to time. I got them while snowboarding and surfing too. Now the scar is from a dog, just like that,” Efimova told .
