Gleikhengauz on the redistribution of medals at the 2022 Olympics: “I am surprised that we were given third place. I was sure that we would be deprived of everything”

Honored Coach of Russia in Figure Skating Daniel Gleikhengauz who works as a choreographer in Eteri Tutberidze’s group, admitted that he was surprised by the decision to redistribute the medals at the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing after the disqualification of Kamila Valieva.

In late January 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for an anti-doping rule violation. This led to a review of the results of the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games. The International Skating Union (ISU) moved the Russian team from first to third place. As a result, the American team received gold and the Japanese team received silver. The Canadian team, which finished fourth, also won the bronze medal by appealing the ISU decision to CAS, but the court retained the bronze medal for the Russian team.

— Did you see the award ceremony for the Americans and the Japanese? Was it painful to watch?

— I only saw the photo. The most painful thing at first was the shock we experienced at the Olympics. And then there were consequences. I think of Kamila, of us and of the whole team.

— So the shock in Beijing was greater than when you learned the result?

– Yes. Everything was pretty much clear already. I’m actually surprised that they gave us third place. I was sure that we would be completely deprived of everything,” Sport24 quotes Gleikhengauz.
