Group Choreographer Eteri Tutberidze Honored Coach of Russia in Figure Skating Daniel Gleikhengauz recounted what questions he answered during the hearings of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case Kamila Valieva .
In late January 2024, CAS suspended Valieva for four years for an anti-doping rule violation. This led to a review of the results of the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games by the International Skating Union (ISU). The Russian team moved from first to third place. Thus, the American team took first place and the Japanese team took second place. Team Canada, which became the fourth to appeal the ISU decision to CAS, is also aiming for the bronze medal.
— You participated in the hearings on the Valieva case, how did it go? Did you feel any prejudice?
— It was online. I arrived at the law firm that was handling his case, it was in Moscow. Participated in the meeting via video link. Honestly, it was an exciting experience. It was just “stupid”, everything was so official, “swear to tell only the truth”, and so on.
— Did you answer in English?
— There was a translator, I spoke Russian. They asked questions. I am not a stupid person, but it seemed to me that with each question they led to the answer they needed. It does not matter what you answer. You were asked a question, you answered it. You are asked the same question, but in a different wording. And so on for five minutes in a row. You sit and do not understand what they want from you.
I told them everything as it was, there were no problems. My questions were quite simple: “Have you seen Grandpa? Yes, I saw him, he brought us cucumbers. I spoke to him directly. I was not asked any direct questions about doping. It was as if the fact that I am a figure skating coach did not matter to them.
– Was it just once?
— I went there once. It wasn’t that long for me – about 30-40 minutes.
— So we had the feeling that everything was going in the same direction?
– Yes, there is a specific version or direction. They need you to answer there. If you don’t answer correctly, they keep asking the same question,” Gleikhengauz said, as quoted by Sport24.
