Estonian figure skater Solen Mazenge said the athlete who sexually assaulted her knew she was under the influence of drugs at the time and took advantage of that vulnerability.
Mazenge revealed in September that she had been the victim of a sexual assault during an official tournament last season.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the messages and support I have received since I decided to speak publicly about what I experienced. Your words and your solidarity touched me deeply. It gives me the strength to move forward.
I say all this because the situation remains unchanged. It is unthinkable for me to come across this person again during competitions, as if nothing had happened. He took advantage of my vulnerability, knowing that I was under the influence of drugs (which he personally witnessed), to do something irreparable. I refuse to remain silent. It’s time for the shame to pass to the other side.
Today, I speak out not only to advance my story, but also to encourage others to speak out. My story is not unique,” Mazenge said on social media.
Mazenga is 21 years old and practices ice dancing with Marko Gaidaenko. In September 2022, Solen fell off a support during training, suffered a skull fracture and spent a week in intensive care. She underwent an emergency craniotomy; the operation lasted several hours.
