Swiss cyclist Muriel Furre, who died in hospital following a fall during the Junior World Championships, waited an hour for help from rescuers in the forest, reports the Belgian publication HLN.
The 18-year-old athlete was taken by helicopter to Zurich hospital on Thursday. She was in extremely serious condition due to head trauma resulting from a fall. She had surgery the same evening. On Friday, we learned of the cyclist’s death.
According to media reports, after the fall, the girl remained unnoticed in the forest for about an hour. The International Cycling Union (UCI) is not commenting on this information, pending the conclusions of an official investigation carried out by the competent authorities.
According to Swiss newspaper Blick, no search and rescue activities were carried out directly on the ground during the race and representatives of the Swiss Cycling Federation asked about Furre’s whereabouts only half an hour after the arrival of the race.
The motorcyclists in the escort group were also unaware of the fall. Additionally, according to media reports, race organizers and security personnel are currently prohibited from releasing information about the accident.
