Tarasova: “We should have appealed Valieva’s disqualification earlier, in the first months. The chances would be higher”

Honored Coach of the USSR in figure skating Tatyana Tarasova told she would appeal the decision to disqualify the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva It was worth it before.

On Wednesday, it became known that the Swiss Federal Court had rejected an appeal against the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to disqualify Valieva. At the end of January 2024, the CAS suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The International Skating Union (ISU) has reviewed the results of the 2022 Games figure skating team tournament, won by the Russian team. First place was awarded to the American team, the Japanese came second, and the Russians received bronze.

“I didn’t expect any other decision.” It has long been clear that the Swiss court will reject any proposal [апелляцию]. It seems to me so.

—Was it worth getting involved in all these courts?

“It’s always worth fighting for, but the appeal should have been filed even sooner.” How long has it been since 2021? You had to apply in the first months. I think there is a chance then [на положительный исход] would be higher,” Tarasova told .

In February, the CAS announced the registration of appeals against the ISU decision on the redistribution of medals from the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympics: from the Russian Olympic Committee, the Russian Federation figure skating and Russian figure skaters. CAS concluded that Valieva’s results in the Olympic figure skating team competition were rightly disqualified.

Valieva’s suspension period begins on December 25, 2021 and her results have been canceled since that date.
