You read my regular column on . Almost every day I post “revelations for the elite” on one of the paid platforms. Recently, I also started a separate blog, where I talk about pregnancy, or more precisely, about the pregnancy of an athlete.
With the exception of , which (of course!) earns me mountains of gold (ha ha), the rest of the media does not generate significant revenue. The subscription is made paid, mainly to cut the incredible number of robots, advertisements and comments. The robots don’t have a bank card yet!
A considerable part of the funds that go from my wallet to various good and necessary causes are your subscriptions and donations, thank you very much. Besides, working in the media for charity doesn’t seem like a good choice to me. I don’t think it’s right to talk publicly about supporting certain projects – there’s an element of self-promotion there that I don’t like. Whoever deems it necessary speaks for me.
Back to the main question. Why do we need an active media presence and a constant presence in the information field? Especially if it doesn’t bring in money comparable to what I earn in premium skiing?
Two reasons.
The first is brain training. If you don’t force yourself to do something, your brain becomes acidic.
We train 5-6 hours a day, plus mandatory recovery procedures – massage, stretching, etc. The standard mode for an athlete in the early evening is to lie down and go to sleep. All you feel is just tired, you don’t want to do anything. I think the vast majority of athletes recognize themselves in this description. By the way, it turned out that in this regard the life of a professional athlete and the life of a pregnant woman are very similar, ha!
If you don’t push yourself, don’t force your brain to turn on, when the body is at rest, there is no development, degradation sets in gradually.
Almost all of my fellow athletes understand this and try to learn something practical. We all have a fear called “what will I do when I stop skiing (skating, swimming, etc.)”. Therefore, almost everyone tries to master a new profession. Online courses are everything to us. But there is a big problem here. You’ve taken some wonderful courses, for example, in nutritional science, what next? How to “go to work”, how to find clients, how to flaunt your assets while training at Top of Thea?
Running your own blog, podcast or feed is much more convenient. All you need is the internet and the will to win. That is to say, conquer a new audience without leaving the hotel room. At the same time, writing columns and speaking live is not just about expressing thoughts to the audience in a chaotic manner. It is always an attempt to find the right words to organize a discussion on a particular problem. Suggest something new. And of course, it is about the analysis and analysis of errors and gaps, especially after the broadcasts.
The second reason is the desire to change the current situation. There are professional sports in world sports where the main characters are the athletes themselves. And there are those where there are unknown officials. Regarding the first, you read news that looks like this, for example:
“…UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has announced that he has no plans to fight Belal Muhammad yet…”
Once again: it was not the coach, nor the club or the manager, but the respected Islam Ramazanovich himself who made the decision. Because he will perform and the audience will watch him too. And if he thinks that he is now more interested in a rematch with the American Poirier and it will not bother him, then it will be as the athletes decided.
Now imagine something similar in cross-country skiing. Let’s say that Bolshunov says that he has already defeated Klebo several times and is now more interested in defeating young Korostelev. Science fiction as things stand today!
The viewer is only really interested when there is a duel between the two main stars. An action cannot have more than two main characters. Everyone else is, sorry, supporting roles.
And now imagine that Bolshunov is ready to fight Korostelev, but only in skiathlon and only at the new ski stadium in Kazan, because today he is the coolest in Russia. I can already hear how ski fans, who rather remember the rivalry between Nikolai Zimyatov and Gunde Swan, are indignant: where did we see this, we have a serious sport, not a show! And what to spend there is decided by serious people, not by certain athletes!
Well, this is precisely why officials and various “representatives” of the FIS, “serious”, but unknown and completely stuck in the last century, have once again excluded us from international competitions. Because let the skiers decide for themselves, they will really agree among themselves. They will find an agreement with television and with sponsors. And suddenly, no one needs civil servants anymore. And I write and speak to bring closer the day when athletes participate in making such decisions. This is another meaning of my “increased media exposure”.
I have already made my voice quite recognizable – although there is still a long way to go. But alone on the field is not a warrior. The more people who speak out so loudly and do not hesitate to speak out on issues that concern us specifically, the sooner we will make our sport (not just that of skiers) more modern and more successful. Don’t be lazy and don’t be afraid, join us!
