ISU suspends Canadian figure skater Sorensen accused of rape

The International Skating Union (ISU) suspended the Canadian figure skater Nicolas Sorensen who is accused of sexual assault, according to the organization’s website.

In January, media reported that Sorensen had been accused of sexually assaulting an unnamed former U.S. figure skater and now coach in 2012. The woman was 22 at the time of the incident. On Wednesday, journalist Christine Brennan reported that Sorensen had been suspended for at least six years. The decision, subject to appeal, was taken by the independent Canadian organization for the prevention and fight against abuse in sport (Abuse-Free Sport).

— The ISU has been informed by Skate Canada of non-abuse sport sanctions against Team Canada athlete Nikolai Sorensen and is taking all necessary steps to implement the decision to suspend him indefinitely. As a result, the athlete has been suspended from all competitions under the auspices of the ISU and will not participate in the ISU Grand Prix Figure Skating series.

The ISU firmly believes that all athletes have the right to participate and develop in sport in a safe, inclusive and respectful environment, free from any form of discrimination, harassment, abuse, violence, neglect or operating, indicates a press release published on the ISU website.

Sorensen is 35 years old, at the beginning of his career he played for Denmark and since the 2018/19 season he started to represent Canada. Partnered with Laurence Fournier-Baudry, he took ninth place at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing and fifth at the 2023 World Championships.
