Russian figure skater, producer and choreographer Ilya Averbukh told Sport24 the story of his legendary beard.
Let me talk a bit about your image. Do you remember the last time you appeared in public without a beard?
– No, I don’t remember. But a very long time ago. At first, I had a goatee, even when we were performing somewhere in the 26-27 region. It turns out that one of the complaints against our couple was that we are still children, that there is no seriousness in skating. And my friend says, “Maybe you should already grow your beard?” And from that moment, I tried. By the way, I can say that I’m one of the first to allow myself to do that – now everyone skates so brutally with beards (laughs), and then, of course, the skater had his face clean shaven, and the beard was revolutionary history. But from then on, I felt the results were gone and the beard was left.
Is there a possibility that you will shave it in the future?
– There is a possibility that he will fall (laughs).
“So you’re not going to shave?”
“That’s how it’s going to be,” Averbukh said.
