Cyclist Evlanova talks about the junior world record: “I wanted to beat it at the world championships, but I couldn’t go to China”

Russian cyclist Ekaterina Evlanova told she was determined to break the junior world record in the 500 meters standing at the World Championships in China, but was happy to have, in principle, managed to set this feat.

On Monday, Evlanova covered the distance in 33.286 seconds at the Russian Championships in St. Petersburg. The 17-year-old Russian was supposed to compete at the World Championships in China, but due to visa issues, Russian riders were unable to compete in the Middle Kingdom.

— Initially, I was preparing to break the record at the Junior World Championships, but unfortunately, due to some circumstances, I could not go. But we managed to set a record in our championship, and I am happy with that too.

— The previous record of 33.812 seconds was set in Cali, Colombia, on a high-altitude track. Did you really expect such a fast time?

— To be honest, the result exceeded all my expectations. I specifically tried not to overload my head with the desired seconds, I just aimed to break the record and I managed to do it. Moreover, this is my last year in juniors, next season I will already compete in the “unders”, so it was one of the last opportunities to break the record,” Evlanova told .
