Figure skaters Merenkova and Galimov talk about the Moscow Grand Prix stage: “We are happy with bronze, but we know we can do much better”

Figure skaters Veronika Merenkova and Danil Galimov, who took third place at the Moscow stage of the Russian Junior Grand Prix in pair skating, said they can do better.

On Friday, Merenkova and Galimov took third place in Moscow, scoring 173.01 points in a two-program total. The winners were Polina Shesheleva and Egor Karnaukhov (188.27 points), with second place going to Anastasia Chernyshova and Vladislav Vilchik (179.95).

— How do you evaluate your progress during the season?

Galimov: We skated the short program much better than at the Panin-Kolomenkin Memorial and the test skates. A lot of work was done on the free skate, but my nerves played a role.

Merenkova: We work a lot on both short programs and free programs. We will work even more on the free program, improving it so that we can always skate well.

— Many juniors are practicing the tennis system this season: they participate in tournaments every week. How does this help you?

Galimov: This really helps. More starts means less nervousness when you go to the rinks. We will try to support the tennis system and fight our nerves at the start.

Merenkova: Yes, now we have such a system. We did our second skate test, then we went to the Panin-Kolomenkin memorial here. We will now prepare for the next step.

—What is your next step?

Galimov: Kazan.

— What does this bronze medal mean to you?

Galimov: It’s a small step towards the start of the season. Further, we will walk more and more on these steps, try to climb higher on the pedestal.

Merenkova: Of course, we are also happy with the bronze, but we know that we can do much better, earn more points and skate cleaner. But it was a good start for us.
