Norwegian Johaug talks about athlete pregnancy: “In Russia there is a different culture, where grandparents are almost parents”

Quadruple Olympic champion Teresa Johaug believes that Russian female skiers give birth to children during their professional careers, because they receive constant help from their parents.

At the end of August, Olympic champion Veronika Stepanova announced that she was preparing to become a mother.

“I stopped playing sport because I wanted to become a mother. I wouldn’t forgive myself if I was still competing at 38 or 39, trying to have children but not succeeding.

As for the pregnancy of Russian athletes, it is largely due to a different culture. In Russia, grandparents are almost like parents. They care a lot about the children. Maybe things are different in Norway. If I had just left Christine (my daughter) with mom and dad, it wouldn’t have been received very well,” Johaug was quoted as saying by Dagbladet.

Johaug retired after the 2021/22 season. She gave birth to a child last May. In August, the 36-year-old announced his return to sport and his desire to participate in the 2025 World Championships in Trondheim.
