German truck driver sentenced to four years for the death of Italian cyclist Rebellin

Wolfgang Rieke hit a cyclist in 2022 and then fled the scene

Vicenza court sentenced German driver Wolganga Rike to four years in prison for the hit-and-run murder of an Italian cyclist Davide Rebellina.

In 2022, Riquet was driving a truck on a road in Italy and hit a cyclist who was conducting a training session. The driver did not provide first aid and fled the scene. The investigation established that after the accident, Rike cleared the area on the truck that hit the driver, and then left for Germany. He was detained by German police in the summer of 2023 and then handed over to Italian authorities.

Vicenza prosecutors twice rejected defense requests for a plea deal. The prosecution had sought a five-year sentence for Riquet. The court settled on four years of imprisonment.

Rebellin died at the age of 51. The Italian announced his retirement from a career that had lasted since 1992 a few months before his death. Davide has more than 60 professional victories, including the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Monument, the classic races Flèche Wallonne and the Amstel Gold Race.
