Former Ukrainian chess player Shevchenko was suspended from the Spanish team championship due to phone use

The regular absence of Kirill Shevchenko from the board aroused suspicion among the competition organizers

Romanian grandmaster Kirill Shevchenkowho previously represented Ukraine, was suspended from Spanish Team Championship due to phone use during competition.

Kirill Shevchenko’s regular absence from the board aroused suspicion among the championship organizers. Subsequently, a phone was found in the toilet, and the arbiters suspected its connection with Shevchenko, who was constantly absent during games.

A note was left near the phone so that those entering the toilet stall would not touch the device. The handwriting in it was compared with the handwriting of Shevchenko himself and similarities were found. Also indirectly, Kirill’s guilt was indicated by the time zone on the phone, which was different from Spanish and was Romanian. The chess player himself denied all accusations against him.

Subsequently, the judges held a meeting at which they decided to award Shevchenko defeats in the games and remove him from the competition.

22-year-old Shevchenko previously represented Ukraine at the international level, but from January 2023 the chess player decided to compete under the Romanian flag. Kirill justified his decision by saying that “this will give him more opportunities to grow as a person and as a player.”

Shevchenko won the grandmaster title in 2017. He is the winner of the 2021 European Team Championship as part of Ukraine.
