Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin supported Russian skier Veronika Stepanova, who said the words of the head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, motivate her to train even harder.
In February, the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee recommended that international federations prevent Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions due to events in Ukraine. Bach said earlier this week that the IOC’s position on athletes from Russia and Belarus has not changed, the recommendations remain the same.
– Stepanova told that Bach motivates her to work even harder on herself and be sure to win the Olympics. A worthy example to follow?
– As someone who expresses the point of view not only personal, but, I am sure, of the majority of athletes, his words can only be supported. For us, with all due respect to Mr. Bach, his opinion on the future of Russian sport is not decisive. We have the president of the country, we have a strategy for the development of sport. As I have said more than once, we are a self-sufficient sporting country. And this period of sanctions only offers an additional opportunity to make a self-analysis, to see what means we have, and to further strengthen the national sports system.
Athletes are the standard bearers of our system. If they now live with the same motivation as Stepanova, it is true. Victory at the Olympics has always been a dream for many athletes, and I think our guys will always be able to prove that they are the main sports power, – the correspondent reports Matytsin’s words.
