Swimmer Sjostrem wins fifth European gold in 50m butterfly

Swedish Sarah Sjostrem won the 50m butterfly at the European Swimming Championships in Rome.

Sjöström swam 50 meters in 24.96 seconds in the final, Frenchwoman Marie Vattel was second (25.33), Maike De Ward from the Netherlands – third (25.62). For the 28-year-old Swedish swimmer, this is the fifth gold medal of the European Championships in this discipline.

In the 200m backstroke, Frenchman Yoan Ndoye Brouard won in 1:55.62, followed by Hungarian Benedek Kovacs in 1:56.03, while Briton Luc Greenbank took bronze in 1:56.15.

Italy’s Benedetta Pilato won gold in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.97), her compatriot Lisa Angiolini was second (1:06.34) and Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte was third (1:06.50).

Hungary’s Victoria Mihajvari won gold in the 400m individual medley (4:37.56), another Hungarian representative, Zsuzsanna Jakabos, was second (4:39.79) and Britain’s Freya Colbert was third ( 4:40.06).

Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri took the lead in the 800m freestyle (7:40.86), German Lukas Mertens won silver (7:42.65), bronze went to Italian Lorenzo Galossi (7:43.37) .

In the women’s 4×100m freestyle relay, the British team won (3:36.47), while Sweden (3:37.29) and the Netherlands (3:37.59) also featured among the winners.

In the free program of mixed pairs in synchronized swimming, the Italian team won (Giorgio Minisini, Lucrezia Ruggiero) – 89.7333 points, the Spaniards Emma Garcia Garcia and Pau Ribes Cullia (84.7667) became the second, Josef Solymosy and Silvia Solimosova from Slovakia (77.0333).
