General Director Gornyakov said that the team is becoming less competitive due to long travel
General manager Shakhtar Sergei Palkin spoke about the difficulties the club faces when performing at the international level.
“When you arrive, you are already less competitive than your opponent due to physical and psychological conditions. Spending two days on a bus or on a plane is very difficult.”
“Do you understand what kind of life we have? I think we are a unique club because if you look at the history of European football, you will not find a club like ours – with a very tough, very strong and complex history.”
“When you have a war in your country, a full-scale invasion, it is difficult to attract the best talent because they are afraid – that’s all. We are trying to guarantee some kind of security for the players – where they stay, where they play, how they move, all this logistics. But sometimes it’s difficult.”
Shakhtar intends to hold charity matches with Porto, Benfica and Sporting in support of Ukraine. According to Palkin, the club is going through difficult times and is staying afloat through transfers.
The miners made an unsuccessful start in the Champions League, gaining one point in two rounds. In the next round of the Champions League, Shakhtar will play against London Arsenal on October 22. The match will be officiated by a French team of judges led by Benoit Bastien.
