The Ukrainian heavyweight world champion spoke about preparations for a rematch with the “Gypsy King”
WBC, IBO, WBA and WBO heavyweight world champion Alexander Usik (22-0, 14 KOs) spoke about preparations for the second fight with the former WBC title holder Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs).
“How was training camp? Everything is fine, thank God. The mood is good, the team is assembled. There is something to work on.”
“I don’t care what people say on the Internet. They are curious about it, not me. Yes, social media is distracting and time-consuming. And when you don’t use them, you fill your head with useful information. It’s books, learning something new. It really helps you concentrate on the work you’re doing.”
“Every training is different. We attract scientists, new psychologists. Science and sports. Many people don’t understand this, but we understand what we are doing. This will help me be the best in the second fight with Tyson Fury.”
“The point is not in the number of sparring rounds, but in the quality. The last camp was such that more than 500 rounds were held. There may be as many in the new camp, but I don’t know. The coach sets the task and I carry it out.”
“Sparring partners? It makes no difference if you are a professional or an amateur. We will involve everyone who meets Fury’s criteria. You definitely need to watch their sparring or training, and then the coaching staff will tell you whether he is suitable or not. Sometimes guys come who seem to be suitable, but when they enter the ring in the first round, it’s clear that they don’t do what they need to do. He can stay another week, work and squeeze something out of himself. If this does not happen, then payment is made and they go home. Everything is fair, we are not going to keep those who don’t help us.”
Let us remember that on the night of May 18-19, Usik inflicted the first defeat in his professional career on Tyson Fury in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.
An agreement has been concluded between Usik and Fury for a re-fight. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Alexander and Tyson will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said he would seek the introduction of video replays in this fight. Oleksandr Usyk will prepare for the rematch in a training camp in Valencia. Tyson Fury said he will begin training six to seven weeks before the fight.
