Only those who are ready to win on the world stage will be accepted into the national team, and they will have to grow up quickly. Chronicle of Veronica Stepanova

I categorically disagree with the idea that the job of athletes is only to train and perform, and then some adult uncles and aunts will decide for us where and how to do it. It’s like saying: an intelligent uncle-screenwriter will write the roles, and an intelligent aunt-director will tell the actors how to stand and what faces to make. Maybe that’s how it works for aspiring actors, but the stars are fully involved in the process. Should it be the same in sports: they turn on the TV for us, they come to the stadium for us, they bet on us? This means that we have the right to vote and we must use it.

That’s why I use competition breaks for more than just walks in the woods or watching pregnancy tutorials. I attend meetings and forums where we discuss (sometimes vehemently) how Russian sport can continue to live. Because it will definitely no longer be possible to live as before – this simple idea is not yet obvious to everyone. They would understand if they heard, for example, what was said at the forum “Gaming: Contributions to Sports” by the First Deputy Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Odes Baysultanov. Here is the quote in full:

“…Where you can calculate the average global result in seconds/meters/kilograms, let’s take a bar, how many in the world and here. At least 10-15% less. In athletics, only Shubenkov was able to fulfill the standard. What is the rest of the team doing? There are people over 40 years old, the result is below the CMS, and because a certain respected coach decided he could shoot. He can’t take it anymore. Only in intellectual sports…”

I appreciate the frankness and frankness of the sports authorities. And I understand that this is not even a very transparent hint – a direct promise of what will happen in the very near future.

Does this mean that today’s teenagers who are seriously involved in sports should urgently change their dreams and plans? After all, the selection for the national team will become much more difficult if someone has not yet understood the meaning of the changes.

No, but they should understand now that glory and all the benefits of life associated with it will come only to the best. There is no longer any hope that you will meet the Master of Sports standard and be accepted into an “extended national team for the future”. The Prime Deputy Minister spoke as frankly as possible and it is obvious to me: only those who are ready to win on the world stage will be accepted into the national team. And maybe not ever, but in the near future. Correct me if this is wrong, Odes Khasaevich!

We will have to grow up quickly.

Bolshunov beat the entire senior team in qualifying competitions at the age of 20. At 21, Ustyugov was the leading sprint hope at the Sochi Olympics. Belorukova (Stupak) won her first World Championship medal when she was just 22 years old. In modern sport, if you don’t peak early and start winning at a young age, you won’t win on the world stage. And now, the national team, these are the ones who have a serious chance of winning there. Only them.

What should those who have not matured quickly or are simply very good athletes do, but not Bolshunov or Klebo in terms of talent? Learn how to earn money yourself with your sporting talents.

Last week, Olympic champion and now vice-president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation Nikita Nagorny announced the launch of the Gymnastics Premier League. Teams will compete against each other and “teams” will not be included. At least not in the main lineup.

We all need to learn from the skaters and their producers – they have masterfully translated the sport into shows that people actually watch. Top stars are constantly making news and making money like no other singles skater – that is, representatives of non-team sports – ever dreamed of in 2024.

If gymnasts manage to put on their own show, it’s because they have grasped the trend. I don’t care why people watch them: for the excitement of combat or the beauty of the elements. The main thing is to watch.

Yes, in skiing, skating, bobsleigh, etc. you do not give points for artistry and beauty of movements. And it is unlikely that spectators will see any movement technique. So you have to figure out how to do “ah!” in our sports. I have already written it above: there will not be room for all promising juniors in compact teams. Cultivate it, make it a star in your city, region, federal district. Write about her in local newspapers, in film reports – “carve the image” of a local champion. The one who will go to the Spartakiad and show all the team leaders how to run. Prepare her for a start in the season – like someone very smart who prepared 18-year-old Dima Puzanov for one, but the main race of the Russian Cup final this year. It’s 100 times better to win a start than to be in the top ten all the time.

Explain that free time from training is not given for browsing social networks or playing games, but for writing competent letters to local businesses requesting sponsorship. As my German friend writes every week, as my Norwegian friend writes, this is not only normal, it is correct.

We don’t drown people to save ourselves. But we are floundering in place. And they have to swim fast.
