Ethiopian runner Kejelcha breaks half marathon world record

The athlete showed a time of 57:30 at a competition in Valencia

Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha broke the world record in half marathon. The new world best result at this distance is now 57 minutes and 30 seconds.

Kejelcha took part in the World Athletics Gold Label series competition in Valencia. The Ethiopian athlete improved by a second the previous world achievement, which was set by Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon three years ago.

During the first kilometers, the athletes stayed behind the pacemakers, who showed high speed. Then Kejelcha took the lead and began to dictate his own pace. Soon only a small group remained with him, and then the last fellow travelers fell behind. Kejelcha was 47 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Daniel Matejko from Kenya.

Yomif is a multiple winner of various world and African competitions. Kejelcha won silver at the 2019 World Championships in the 10,000 meters. At the 2024 Olympics, Yomif took fifth place in this distance.
