The Gunners missed the opportunity to get close to the leaders, the Reds let Man City take first place
Arsenal did not retain victory over Liverpool in the central match of the 9th round English Premier League – 2:2.
Three of the four goals were scored before the break. The Gunners managed a quick goal – it was scored by Bukayo Saka, who had barely recovered from injury, whose participation was in doubt until the last moments. At the age of 23 years and 52 days, the winger became the youngest Arsenal player to score 50 Premier League goals.
Liverpool quickly recovered through the efforts of Virgil van Dijk. But before the break, Mikel Merino scored his debut goal for the London club, making only his second start for Arsenal.
The second half passed with a noticeable advantage for the guests. And Arne Slot’s team achieved what they wanted in the final stretch. Mohamed Salah once again acted as a lifesaver for the Reds, who converted Darwin Nunez’s assist.
Mohamed scored his 163rd Premier League goal, equaling the tally of the legendary Robbie Fowler. Now two representatives of Liverpool share 8th place in the list of top scorers of the tournament. The closest benchmarks for Mohamed are Thierry Henry (175 goals scored) and Frank Lampard (177).
The draw, by and large, did not suit either side. Liverpool, having lost points for only the second time in the championship, lost first place, losing out to Manchester City. Arsenal missed the opportunity to rise to third place and get closer to today’s opponent.
Both teams will play their next matches in the League Cup on October 30: the Londoners against Preston, and the Liverpudlians against Brighton.
